Underoath  - Act Of Depression (1999)

Insane metal-core along the lines of Embodyment and Zao. Only this band had added even more (if that is possible) dimensions to their sound. There are only six songs on this hour long CD!  They create a dynamic soundscape and take the listener on a journey through the harsh realities of life. Lyrically tackling hefty subject matter like child abuse and molestation, suicide and abortion. All the while praising Jesus and showing His love as the only answer to these turbulent times. I heard these guys referred to as "Holy roller metal" and I really think that is a fitting term. Another great band that is not afraid to preach the gospel and be associated with our Saviour. The music is a non-stop mix of hardcore, metal, death metal, and even doom guitar riffs. It is truly amazing that they could pull this off because it does not sound out of focus or like they are trying to play many styles. It is all somehow very creatively mixed to form one beautiful CD. The vocals range from extreme hardcore shouts to deep guttural death (especially on the last couple tracks) to some raspy almost black metal style wails. They have even tossed in a bit of emo! The CD includes a salvation message and praise song as a hidden bonus! -- Review by Norm
