January Sun - Dodge This! (2000)

This four piece modern metal band from Wichita, Kansas is sure to impress more than a few people with their second release "Dodge This!". Overall the sound is very heavy and modern with lots of chunky groove style guitars, clear powerful vocals and
big catchy choruses. Influences from bands such as Disciple, Alice In Chains and Creed can be heard in the music. Guitarist Chris Widney delivers the riffs with intensity and a wall of raw distortion. Don Mercer handles the vocal chores quite well sounding dark and clever much like the singer of Days of the New only with much more power and range. For the most part this is a heavy and driving disc that has its roots firmly planted in the metal genre with influences ranging from thrash to grunge. Most the songs on here are more than capable of stirring the pit!! There are a couple of mellow tunes included here like the artistic rock ballad "Something More" and the jangly acoustic album intro "What If". My favorite track on here is a tune called "Complicated my Way" which opens with a dark droning guitar line which continues throughout and then bursts into the easily accessible chorus that just flat out rocks! I would recommend this recording for fans of all the above mentioned bands and also for fans of bands like Lordchain, Kings Machine, and Nailed. -- Review by Norm
