Corpse - From the Grave (1997)

This is one of my personal favorite death albums ever (despite the poor muddy production). These guys play death metal the way I like it, old school with some "doomy" variety! The first track is probably one of the best and comes straight at you with a classic old school death approach. Blast beats are used properly and the double bass is there too. There are the blurred grinding guitar parts on the fast songs and then there are the painfuly slow doom segments to accentuate this disc. I have heard lots of people complain that the production is poor or that the playing is too slow and doomy, personally I find neither to be the case (but then again I dig that sludgy doom sound). It seems that this disc is too slow for the "speed mongers" and yet to fast for the "doomsayers", I think the mix is just right. The best thing I think we can all agree on would be the vocals. Brutal guttural and straight on death all the way through. There are no "goth/clear" vocals or any "black rasp", like so many are trying to do these days, just true death vox! If you dig bands like Morbid Angel and Crimson Thorn, you should get a copy while they are still around. -- Review by Norm
